A MODEL OF RURAL ECONOMIC STRENGTHENING AROUND NIPAH DAM BY DEVELOPING MICRO FINANCIAL INSTITUTION

The development of Nipah Dam caused economic and demographic problem for society around this project. This dam needs around 357.073 ha spreaded into 7 villages. It causes many people must be removed from their house and they have no land anymore. The condition of society is in poor condition, refers to low education (only in third class in Elementary school) and low income. From this phenomenon, it is important to find a good solution in society empowerment program. The economic strengthening program was needed to encourage rural people who have charactheristic unskilled labor, so they cannot easily transfer to another sector.
Many methods was used in this research. It is used qualitative and quantitative method for bencmark with technique: (a) social auditing, (b) Economic auditing, (c) Community and resources mapping and (d) Participatory Rural Appraisal. Then, the researchers tabulate, analyze and interpret the data.
Summaries of the first year research are: (a) Many villages in around Nipah Dam has potency in agriculture comodity (i.e. hay, manggo) (b) Empowerment model needs Local human resources skill (c) The potencial business in Nipah Dam are rice mile, meubelair and handycraft (d) Local substitution system in research area are barter system, Local exchange system, “arisan tradisional” system dan “gotong royong” system
Recommends of the first year research are : (a) available of partnership link from distric, sub distric and village, (b) it is needed a clearly research to know the factors were influenzed economic (c) it is needed a improvement local product competitiveness (d) Local exchanged system (gotong royong) needed a revitalize.
